One weekend. Six dives. Bring it on.

So. Where in the h-e-double-hockey-sticks have I been? Why learning to scuba dive of course! For the first three weeks in May I spent in a classroom, the community center and the quarry getting my scuba I and scuba II certification - and it ROCKED! In order to become an open water diver you can opt to complete the final piece of the course at a quarry in Ohio. So last weekend I sweet-talked a boy into coming with me on a road trip, and here we went...to the quarry. Very peaceful looking isn't it? Well read on...

The beautiful, calm water above looks nice enough however what lies beneath is a whopping 45 degrees and as my dive instructor put it: "it's not cold, it's lacking warmth". Um, yeah. But you'll be glad to know that at 50 feet below its only 38 degrees. As I put it: "that's ass cold is what that is". You'll see by my super-hot outfit below that leaping into that kind of water temperature requires a nice 14mm of wetsuit...which is nice and hot on the dock but then the water slowly seeps in from the top. Oh baby.

The boy that was kind enough to be sweet-talked into jumping in that water with me. He wasn't wearing quite as thick a wetsuit so I owe him hot chocolate for the rest of his life.

In case you're wondering what exactly is the draw at the quarry - here's the map. It's really kinda cool because there is lots of sunken stuff like an airplane, bus, helicopter and an interesting assortment of oddities from cars to soda machines. I thought all the sunken stuff rocked and I have always thought shipwrecks were cool so now I can't wait to dive a real wreck here in Michigan.

The whole crew (about 12 of us) went to a nearby town for a uber-good BBQ dinner. While waiting Tony and I stumbled across a great little town next door that had a gorgeous church, great little park and a very interesting cemetery - all the stones were made into a grotto at one corner. You gotta love road trips and the unexpected places they take you...

I'm looking forward to diving all summer throughout Michigan but I can hardly stand the wait until we go diving in Honduras in September! OK. So that's it, I'll shut up and I'll try not to be such a blogging slacker from now on...

Carter hits the big 0-2!

Since I've been a blogging slacker I'm going to try to make up for it...
Carter partied down as he turned the big 0-2...starting with Aunt Peggy, Jenny and I whipping up another cake original, of course, well themed with "Tommy Choo-choo" galore!

Carter + Cake = Love :)

There was so much partying, poor Carter just couldn't make it any farther...that would be him in the background - passed out on the step - unable to go up or down. That's tired...and proof that his ChaCha taught him how to party like a rockstar!

Minor disaster

Sorry there is no photo today but a couple weeks ago I had a minor computer disaster. I was happily chugging along when my trusty old G4 just gave a death rattle and ceased all function. I cried. I had just started a major backup process and was very fearful all was lost. Thankfully, tech support (I love Jeff) came to the rescue and all the information is safe...but the old girl is still in several pieces waiting for a new power supply. So until that time all my memory cards are nicely filling up waiting paitently to unload to the blog. The moral of the story: back your information up, back your information up, back your information up...did I mention it would be wise to back your information up?

On life side, things are going well, it's the busy time at work and I'm about to enter the same crazy schedule I did last summer...three nights of sports (volleyball, golf and softball)! Who me? Busy? Nah. I did decide to throw scuba diving in there and am looking forward to doing some shipwreck diving this summer. Well, thanks for looking in and I hope everything is going well, I swear the blog will be back in full operation soon!

K :)

Some like it hot...

On a semi-whim (and a scheduling issue) Tony and I said what the heck maybe we should go somewhere with all his time off. So a-researchin' we went and ended up losing a great vacation on lastminute(dot)com because I was dumb and didn't realize you have to book them when you find them or you lose them. Doh. Our second package then came to us via cheap tickets(dot)com and was to a place neither of us really had wanted to go, but it was hot and "not here" (as I requested).
Henceforth, on March 29, we hit the airport and jetted off to Puerto Rico to a resort on the south side of the island (the Copamarina). Dang yo.

This was our view (we chose the cheap garden-view...and yes, that's the ocean beyond the garden).

After od'ing on food at a very tasty breakfast, we parked in the sun for a few hours - first dragging our chairs into the water...then under that thatched roof hut you see out there in the ocean, the warm-as-bath-water-Carribean-Sea, I mean hey, you need some shade when you're as white and reflective as I am.

After all that work, I took my boy for a sunset snorkeling trip a town or two over. Where our resort is located is technically a desert because of the way it is protected by the mountains - so even though it's sunny at the resort does not mean it's not raining on the other side of the mountain...hence the cloudy sky in some of the snorkeling photos. I think the snorkeling would have been better had the sun been out more but oh well, the nighttime swim in the bioluminescent bay made up for it. As I did not have a tripod with me I didn't get any really cool photos of that, but if you want to find out what it is read here: http://www.biobay.com/ - this is not where we were, but it's the same concept. It was like swimming in the stars. Very cool. Bad for photography.

As we were walking to the snorkeling boat I did find one of Jack Spa.rrow's boats...

The canals were lined with little vacation homes like these that are the last of their kind. The boat guy told us they cannot be rebuilt if they are destroyed because there can be no more building to preserve the canals. So we inquired as to how much one would cost. He told us people don't sell them because they are too valuable and if they were they would cost a great deal. Natrually we asked how much one would cost if available and the reply was, "Oh very costly, maybe $150,000-200,000.". Um. Ok. Where do I sign?

How'd you like one of these babies in your bed. eeeesh.

The sunset of the "sunset snorkel trip" - directly after this sunset the wife of the dive shop owner we were with made us some traditional dish that was tasty but we both could have used about 10 more of them...chicken empanadillas...yum.

Meanwhile, it becomes the next day and viola, back at the beach. In the sun. It was hot. And great. While Tony was scuba diving I planted myself on a great bed on the beach...for four hours. It was just awful, I swear. Nap. Read. Nap. Read. Nap. Suduko. Take a picture. Nap. (I left my feet in this picture so you could truly see that I was in fact staring at the Carribean Sea.)

More of the view...and that bed on the left just happens to be juuuust like the one I planted myself in for four-six hours. Hey someone had to do it. I just wanted to take one for the team.

OK, and after much hooey from you people, here is a picture of the elusive Tony. Although i'm taking a vote of which one to keep on here. Tony says the first one I say the second. Since Ryan's on vacation you'll all have to weigh in on which one to keep. Man, I really need to get into the sun more. (minus the part of me that was severely sunburned from the first round of being in the sun on Sunday.) Owwwweeee. Make sure to get the sunblock everywhere...otherwise your skin has a great way of showing you just where you missed in really stupid places.

That's it. I have recommendations if you decide to go to our tropical territory but in general if I had to return to PR it would definitely be to the south or west side...and NOT San.Juan. It better get summer here quick, that was a definite teaser.

Girls Weekend - part deux.

Yes, photos of Puerto Rico are coming....in the mean time...
It was back up to Gladwin for another weekend away and while Jenny and I were mucho productive creating three quilts, we also took a turn on the zipline and the giant swing.

Peggy had heisted my camera and I was giving her warnings about proper use of the camera that includes not taking pictures of the camera owner. That's our best thug impression. Scary aren't we?

The heart-stopping first free-fall is crazy (this would be Jenny)....

...and the first swing out over the river is equally as heart-stopping (and that would be me)...

And now it's on to editing Puerto Rico....

Yeah, yeah, I know

Yes, yes I know I've been a big blogging slacker but there's lots of great reason for it I swear. So I'm smashing the last six weeks into one giant post with a very strange hodge-podge of photos. This will need to tide you over for at least two weeks so I can have time to post photos from the trip to Puerto Rico (this weekend!!) and the girls weekend that immediately follows. Who? Me? Burn the candle at both ends? Never. :)

At Easter dinner last Sunday Ethan and Carter finally performed for the camera...the "Nana Face". Carter tries really hard to match the look Ethan is giving (which is actually a great impression of a face Nana really does make) but it just comes off as a very mean look that you can't help but laugh at.

Carter + Cake = Happy Carter

I spent most of this winter in a horrible state of NO CAR DOOR HANDLE. Let me just say it really stinks. A lot. But.....

...I did coerce my brother into fixing it, but I had to talk him into it...while we tried out a couch my mother picked up at an estate sale. She took this photo before we could protest. It's rather entertaining to chill in the garage on a sunny morning. While it looks like relaxation, it was actually a negotiation for fixing the door handle...it cost me a forgiven debt, a lotto ticket and two coffees. Not bad for the amazing ability to open your car door.

Tony and I took a quick winter break up north in the end of February where we stopped through my parents cottage and then stayed in Traverse City. Always great sunrises up north...

And the sun going down...

A spot we stopped in Glen Haven...

Overlooking the creaky ice in Empire. It's really freakin' cold there at that time of year, but it was kinda cool being the only people for miles. If you stand really still, you can hear the motion and creaking of the ice - eerie, but kinda cool.

If only I had thumbs, I'd play....

I wasn't quick enough to get this picture in focus but the content cracks me up so I'm posting it. A few weeks back we were playing cards at Ryan's and Jeff had to turn to advice anywhere he could get it...he didn't win the game but one of Ryan's new kitties was having a good time learning how to play "frustration".
